Overview
Huge, labyrinthine and with a National Trust arboretum on the doorstep, YHA Langdale makes any group visit feel magical. This atmospheric Victorian mansion has space for over 100 people, a flagstoned meeting room located in the cellar, and endless period charm. School trips can study biology and geography on site or get involved in a range of activities offered by the hostel, including archery, shelter building, guided walks, fire making and team challenges. Walkers will love having Loughrigg Fell, Silver Howe and the Langdale Pikes on their doorstep.
Boasting a one hundred and forty year-old oak panelled Great Hall and adjacent Drawing Room, with stunning views down to Lake Windermere, Langdale is the centrepiece of the historic High Close Estate which includes sixteen acres of National Trust aboretum, the secluded and beautiful Low Wood and Loughrigg Terrace on the doorstep all waiting to be explored. Enjoy group catering including breakfast, lunch and dinner, or enjoy a bottle of local ale from our licensed bar. And don’t get us started on our view.
YHA Langdale is a perfect base for walking groups and field trips, as the fells are literally just outside our door. Take a leisurely walk to unique attractions like the Elterwater Merz Barn, or visit tourist favourites like the Grasmere Gingerbread Shop. Adventure seekers are also spoilt for choice, with challenging mountain bike routes, spectacular climbing spots and thrilling watersports nearby.

How to get here
By car and coach:
If you are driving from the north, we recommend leaving the M6 at junction 36, 37 or 38. From Ambleside follow the A593 to Coniston and the Langdales. After about 1 1/2 miles take the steep right hand turning signposted “High Close” (with YHA OS symbol). Continue to top of the hill for approximately two miles until a left-hand switchback takes you to the hostel, 200 yards on the left.
By bus:
If you are travelling by bus, there is a shuttle bus running between Keswick and Grasmere. You can then change to the regular 555 service.
