Perched on the edge of Lake Windermere, with views out across stunning mountain vistas, YHA Ambleside offers an unforgettable location for a Lake District getaway. This well-equipped hostel is perfect for activity breaks with walking, watersports and climbing nearby. Alternatively, discover the rich literature of the Lakes with a visit to Beatrix Potter or William Wordsworth’s home.
YHA Ambleside hostel offers modern facilities, stylish social areas, a decked area overlooking Lake Windermere, and free Wi-Fi. Educational groups can benefit from a multi-functional room that can be used as a lounge (complete with comfy sofas) or as a classroom with extra facilities like a projector and flipchart. Plus, the hostel is right next door to Ambleside Pier and we have our own jetty and slipway too!
If you’re a Key stage 2 or above group looking for adventure, you’re in the right place. We can help to organise a range of outdoor activities and educational sessions for you. Through our Adventure Bolt-on we work with our AALA licensed partners Carnegie Great Outdoors (CGO) to provide real, safe and thrilling experiences including ghyll scrambling, kayaking and climbing, in the great outdoors. Our Field Studies bolt-on sees us working with our friends at the Field Studies Council (FSC) to provide exam board specification fieldwork. All of the activities are run by highly trained and experienced FSC staff who offer bespoke sessions that are set to inspire a love of the subject for life.
You’ll be spoilt for choice for things to do nearby, with watersports of all descriptions right on the doorstep. If you’re a walking group, the Langdale Pikes or Fairfield horseshoe are perfect for a day of rambling. Lake Windermere is literally on the doorstep, offering cruises and study tours on the water. And the bustling town center of Ambleside is just a short walk away from the hostel, home to some great shops, restaurants and cinemas.

Field Studies Bolt-on
YHA is working with the Field Studies Council (FSC) in the Lake District and the Peak District National Park (PDNP) in the Peaks to provide exam board spec geography and ecology fieldwork activities for groups staying at our hostels in two of our stunning National Parks.
The FSC and PDNP staff running your course are all highly trained and experienced in teaching field studies to all ages and abilities. With knowledge and experience to bespoke the activities your exam board they aim to develop fieldwork skills and techniques that will inspire the love of the subject for life.
All the activities are in the real outdoors and locations are chosen based on the most appropriate landscape features and flora and fauna for your requirements. Once booked you’ll be contacted by our partners who will discuss any specific requirements you may have.
