New bolt on activities available at YHA South Downs
Opened officially by HRH the Queen in 2013, YHA South Downs is a uniquely refurbished Sussex farmhouse in an enviable location right on the South Downs Way. The hostel has 68 beds as well as additional alternative accommodation including camping pods, land pods and bell tents and is surrounded by the hills of the South Downs National Park and enjoys substantial grounds of its own.
The hostel is split between 3 main buildings. The Farmhouse which contains the main accommodation block and social spaces, the long barn which houses our accessible room and great group accommodation, and the interpretation centre, which contains the café/groups dining room and a superb and well-appointed classroom which is fully accessible.
YHA South Downs makes a great base for all types of schools, educational establishments or other organised groups. As well as having a range of social spaces, and the classroom, the hostel is well connected by road and rail. The train station is in fact only 300m from the hostel with regular services to Lewes and Brighton. The South Downs Way runs almost through the hostel and the large grounds surrounding the hostel ensures there is plenty of space for everyone.
For schools and groups looking for activities, YHA works currently with two local activity providers. Sussex: Learning without walls can offer a range of activities including guided walks, team challenges, bush craft, environmental art, bug hunts and more. Sessions can be booked for either a half (3hrs) or full day (6hrs) session and evening activities may be available upon request. Whilst Buzz Active provide a range of Water sports activities based at their site at Cuckmere, a short drive away.
For non-educational and social groups, the area offers a wealth of walking and cycling opportunities right from the door, with a range of wildlife and habitats to be found on the chalky hillsides as you move through the countryside. There is also Lewes which is full of literary intrigue, medieval buildings and cobbled streets not to mention their famous Lewes Bonfire night.
