If you’ve never taken your school to stay with YHA before, we can help you with the process. We’re dedicated to creating unique opportunities for young people to explore, grow and revel in the glorious great outdoors. Engage your students with real, hands-on experiences and extraordinary learning opportunities in England and Wales’ most inspiring and spectacular locations.
Whatever your subject and whatever your school’s needs, with a YHA School Trip you can be confident of a safe, fulfilling and truly unforgettable residential.
Working with teachers and experts in their fields, we have prepared a range of fully flexible residential options that are ideal for school groups of all shapes, sizes and abilities. Whether you are looking for a base for self-led adventures, a National Curriculum linked package with activities delivered for you, classroom space for revision breaks or field study follow up, or an adrenaline fuelled action adventure course – we have it all, and a little bit more for good measure.
We have been enriching the lives of young people since 1932, so you can trust in us to provide you with expert guidance on how to plan a residential that is perfectly tailored to your needs. Plus, over 80 of our sites have Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) accreditation, the most of any provider in the UK, and counting. LOtC accreditation means that all of our risk assessments, insurance and safety logs have been externally audited, and our delivery observed. Many LEAs and MATs recognise the significance of the LOtC badge, making your planning simpler. So, when you stay with YHA you can be confident that you are making the right choice for your educational school trip.
We are proud to have been awarded best residential experience in the School Travel Awards for a second time in 2019/20. We offer lots of unique locations that offer a comfortable base for a memorable residential experience. You could choose to stay in a genuine Norman castle, a stunning Victorian mansion, a newly refurbished beach retreat in a smuggler’s cove or even a mountainside base 1,000 feet above sea level. Whatever you are looking for, YHA’s diverse network offers great value accommodation in England and Wales’ most inspiring locations.
When do I need to book?
Our locations are very popular, particularly at certain times of the school year, so we advise that you book as early as possible to help secure your preferred location and dates. But don’t worry if you can’t because our friendly Contact centre team have access to availability across our whole network of Youth Hostels in England & Wales and will be able to offer you a number of alternatives to suit your group.
Can I visit the hostel before taking my group to stay?
Yes – we offer pre-stay visits so that you can ensure everything is in place before you bring your group to stay. Don’t get bogged down with the pressures of planning your residential, come and stay a night with us and grab an opportunity to familiarise yourself with YHA, meet the staff that will be looking after your group, and gather all the details you need for your paperwork. To book, simply contact our friendly team.
Can you support me with arranging meals and meeting dietary requirements?
To ensure that you make the most of your activities, and to keep tummies from grumbling, we can provide breakfast, packed lunches and evening meals for your group. We will endeavour to be as flexible as possible with your meal times so that they fit in with your itinerary. Our groups’ menu ensures that you are provided with a range of quality, nutritious dishes that will keep energy levels high and satisfy even the fussiest of eaters.
We can meet a range of dietary requests, whether arising from a medical requirement, religious commitment or as a matter of personal preference. All we ask is that we’re notified of any such requests at least two weeks in advance of your stay. We provide food to many groups, so please do let us know as early as possible the time you would like us to serve you your meals so that we can ensure your itinerary runs smoothly.
Do you offer any free leader places?
Yes – any young person’s group of 16 or more people, when taking all meals, will automatically receive one free leader place for every 10 paying guests aged under 26. Free places will be noted on your invoice, but if you have any queries please contact us.
Can you help me arrange activities for my group?
Yes – our flexible approach to arranging activities sets us apart from many residential providers. Whether you want to run a self-led residential with the option to add on YHA activities or would prefer for YHA staff/specially selected external providers to deliver the activities for you, we can help plan the break of a lifetime at a price to suit your budget.
All of our activities aim to inspire, motivate and challenge students and offer bespoke adventures that are tied into the National Curriculum and exploring the great outdoors.
Developed with the support of teachers and industry experts, our packages can be tailored to ensure they fulfil specific academic needs. Our flexible approach to tailoring packages ensures that your residential perfectly complements in-class teaching and matches the appropriate skill levels of your pupils. Our residentials encourage teamwork through physical activities and challenges that develop participant’s social skills. They may also help youngsters who are shy and struggle to interact with others, by building confidence that they can take back to their school setting.
