With the new government requirements for a minimum number of fieldwork days at GCSE, AS and A-level, and with the changes to all the exam boards’ specifications, it may be time to rethink your school’s geography fieldwork options. Whether it is AQA, EDXCEL, OCR or Eduqas, or a self-led or tutored opportunity you are looking for, we probably have more great geography options available than you thought!
Our diverse network of cost effective hostels combined with our unique bursary fund can bring the cost of a four night self-led geography field studies residential closer to the £100 mark or even lower
We aim to provide residential opportunities for young people from all backgrounds and we are aware of the ever decreasing budgets available to schools to support students with the cost of them. Our diverse network of cost effective hostels combined with our unique bursary fund can bring the cost of a four night self-led Geography field studies residential closer to the £100 mark or even lower, making fieldwork accessible to all.
In addition to our options for self-led fieldwork residentials we can also offer tutored courses from a number of our Lake District and Peak District hostels through our delivery partnership with the Field Studies Council and the Peak District National Park. This enables schools to bolt-on additional tutored courses to cover certain aspects of the new specifications, provide local knowledge or expertise and qualifications where needed.
Great group facilities
We are fortunate to have a wide variety of hostels that offer unique opportunities to study specific areas of the new curriculum specifications. Plus, the majority of our hostels offer dedicated classroom spaces which are ideal for completing fieldwork follow up and statistical analysis.
Key stage 2
Ideal for key stage two studies, we offer a YHA led Geography package at YHA Malham and YHA Castleton Losehill Hall. We are incredibly lucky to have hostels in unique locations that are synonymous with Geography topics, and we use this uniqueness to its very best advantage. Find out more about our geography packages.
Coastal processes, landforms and management
YHA Beverly Friary
A great location to explore the unique geography and geology of the Holderness Coastline including Flamborough Head, Hornsea and Spurn head. This location is perfect for studies of Longshore drift, coastal process, coastal management and beach profiling.
Glaciation and cold environments
We have a number of hostels situated in great locations to study the effects of glaciation on our landscape. YHA Eskdale and YHA Borrowdale are both located in glaciated valleys with a number of easily (and not so easily) identified glacial features only a short walk from the hostel door. In Snowdonia our YHA Snowdon Pen-y-Pass hostel can be found at the very base of Snowdon.
Other great locations include:
Urban studies, regeneration and place studies
YHA have a number of superbly located city centre hostels where human geography studies can easily be carried out covering a range of specific specification requirements.
YHA Cardiff Central
Located a 10 minute walk from the main shopping streets and the classic case study that is Cardiff Bay, this location is perfect for studying the processes and effects of a large scale regeneration project. Additionally, for cutting edge studies Port Talbot is only a short drive away.
Combine your human and physical studies
Merthyr Mawr Europe’s second largest sand dune system and the Brecon Beacons National Park are only a short drive away.
This modern hostel is situated a couple of minutes’ walk from Liverpool One and directly opposite the Albert Docks with great transport links and classroom space. YHA Liverpool is another superb location to carry out a range of human geography field work.
Combine your human and physical studies
Split your trip and stay two nights in one of our Lake District or Peak District hostels and then two nights at YHA Liverpool. Alternatively, the sand dunes near Formby and Southport are easily accessed from YHA Liverpool.
