Overview
Explore Northumberland’s fascinating history from our brand-new state-of-the-art location – YHA The Sill at Hadrian’s Wall. The Sill is an exciting £14.8 million initiative of international importance, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The hostel itself is an 86-bed hostel with 26 rooms split across 2 floors, with all accommodation and rooms only accessible using a secure Salto key card system. The hostel is adjoined by The Sill a landscape discovery centre which features fantastic interactive exhibitions focusing on the unique landscape and managed by our partners The Northumberland National Park.
The hostel itself, sits just a stone’s throw from Hadrian’s Wall, making it the perfect location for history buffs, school groups and those looking to engage with this rare landscape. We work alongside the Northumberland National Park and the Vindolanda Charitable Trust to provide bolt-on activities to school groups helping them to make the most of their stay.
For school groups staying at the hostel, both the Roman Army Museum and the awe-inspiring Vindolanda can be booked directly through YHA. As well as entrance to both attractions, schools staying at the hostel can also make use of an exclusive self-led activity box, full of real Roman artefacts and activity guides, created for YHA by the Vindolanda Charitable Trust – perfect for an evening activity, all available for just £6 per pupil.
Alongside ‘The Roman – Bolt-on’ we are also able to offer two Northumberland National Park hosted talks. The ‘This is Your Landscape’ and ‘The Sill building tour’ talks last 30 minutes and make an ideal introduction to the location and the perfect way to start a residential experience.
If you wish to add any of these activities to either a new or existing YHA booking then please get in touch with our Contact Centre team.
In addition to the activities listed above the Northumberland National Park also offer a range of workshops designed for Primary and Secondary school students. Please find a link to further information about these activities here. Bookings for NNPA Workshops should be made directly to the Northumberland National Park via there online enquiry form.
For social and recreational groups YHA The Sill at Hadrian’s Wall is great for walking, cycling and is perfectly set to allow for the exploration of the National Park. The Northumberland National Park updates their website regularly with local events here.
Following a day of activities relax in our contemporary social areas, enjoy a tasty group meal from our stylish café or sit back with a drink and absorb the epic scenery!
Finally new for 2019 Schools, groups and individuals can hire our new Dark Skies self-led activity box to make the most of the night sky.
