Sitting within the Dartmoor National Park, YHA Okehampton Bracken Tor Adventure Centre offers a unique combination of woodland, wildlife, wilderness and accessibility. It is set within 4 acres of landscaped grounds, with stunning views over north Devon. For groups, two separate accommodation buildings allow smaller groups to enjoy their own space, each building with leader rooms, drying rooms, meeting areas and outdoor activity sites. A separate building provides catered groups with a dining room that seats 77.
Okehampton is ideally situated on the edge of the National Park, whilst the moors, tors, crags and lakes that we use as our outdoor learning venues are all within easy reach for our fleet of minibuses. Just beyond Bracken Tor, you can walk on footpaths onto Dartmoor, and the Sustrans cycling track is a short distance down the main road.
On-site activities can include archery, high ropes course, orienteering, climbing wall, team building exercises, cycle tours and night walks/navigation challenges. Off site, our numerous venues ensure the great locations for rock-climbing, gorge-scrambling, abseiling, canoeing, raft- building and weaselling, and include themed watersports or Meldon days that combine several activities in one experience.
Every aspect of our Adventure Activity provision is carefully designed to enhance a group’s learning potential and the overall quality of the experience. Activity groups will be guided through the basic skills required, enabling participants to experience the adrenaline rush as they push their personal boundaries and their confidence grows.
Whatever fully inclusive package is chosen, we work with group leaders to ensure that the programme, venue, content and style are all adjusted to optimise both the group and individual learning opportunities. We can also work to provide accessible adventures for all – any group can add on some activity inputs to enhance their stay. Our accommodation and many activities are accessible to groups or individuals with significant learning and/or physical disabilities.

How to get here
By car and coach:
From the east: leave the A30 at Okehampton junction and follow the road for about one mile into the town. At the third set of traffic lights, on a crossroads junction, turn left following the signs to Okehampton Station and Youth Hostel. After 200m, take the third turning right up Station Road. Follow this road, passing over the railway bridge and A30. There is a small turning on the right, after the dual carriageway, which leads to an unmade road to YHA Okehampton Bracken Tor. Large coaches will not find this easy to access, seek advice from our managers for large groups arriving by coach. Do not use the postcode for GPS Sat Nav as it may try to direct you up an access road for emergency vehicles only. Set your Sat Nav for Okehampton town centre and once there, use the postcode.
