About YHA Osmotherley

Ideal for North Yorkshire Moors walking

Awarded 4* by Visit England, this former cotton mill sits in extensive grounds on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, just a short walk from the historic village of Osmotherley. YHA Cote Ghyll Mill (Osmotherley) has undergone extensive refurbishment and now boasts 14 en-suite bedrooms sleeping 61 in bunk beds all with individual bunk lights. The dining room has also been refurbished and other group facilities include a relaxing lounge and games room for socialising, classroom with whiteboard, secure cycle store as well as free Wi-Fi.

Groups can enjoy a fully catered service for breakfast, lunch and evening meal or can choose to self cater in the extensively equipped self-catering kitchen

For school and youth groups there is a wealth of educational opportunities on the doorstep. Younger children will love the shelter building area, nature trail and bush crafts area with campfire (perfect for toasting marshmallows and campfire singing!), all located within the grounds of Cote Ghyll Mill. We can also provide a range of teacher-led, outdoor activity packs.

For older educational groups the location of the hostel provides a great place to explore miles of moorland terrain, study the flora and fauna of the area and learn about local history. Groups can spend a day finding out about the history of Osmotherley documented to Pre 600AD and take a trip to the Carthusian Monastery, Mount Grace Priory and Lady Chapel; both built in the 14th Century. There’s so much to learn about the past industry in the area including Alum mining, farming and Osmotherley becoming a thriving centre for the linen industry in the 19th Century which was actually in Cote Ghyll Mill. The linen was used for sailcloths made for the local ship building industry. Furthermore, groups can learn about the building of Cod Beck Reservoir in 1953; why and how it was built and what it does today.

Other activities from the doorstep are canoeing at Cod Beck reservoir, abseiling at Cote Ghyll, orienteering, archery, mountain biking, geocaching and hill walking amongst many others. Only a short distance away is rock climbing at Scugdale. Our local Activity Provider will be happy to organise any of these for you.

Social groups can enjoy our tranquil location, perfect for exploring the North York Moors, yet only 15 minutes drive to the bustling market town of Northallerton. The hostel is adjacent to some amazing walking country with an easily accessible network of public footpaths including the Cleveland Way, Coast to Coast Walk and the start of the Lyke Wake Walk. From our doorstep, cycling groups can join Route 65 of the National Cycle Network or enjoy cycling the many bridleways with stunning views which surround the Mill. On an evening you can recover in our licensed bar or walk into Osmotherley to visit the three pubs/restaurants.

Cote Ghyll Mill truly offers something for everyone, whatever your group requirements.
