About YHA Blaxhall

Based near Sutton Hoo for history trips

Sat on the edge of the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, one of the most important areas for wildlife in the whole of Britain, YHA Blaxhall is a dream come true for wildlife lovers.

Located in the heart of the village, this former school is the site of a community recycling scheme, with grounds that encourage biodiversity and is powered in part by solar energy. This comfortable hostel offers a welcoming sanctuary at the end of a busy day. Relax and play games in our cosy TV lounge, enjoy a delicious breakfast or evening meal in our dining room (we can provide take-away packed lunches for your group too), or step outside to enjoy our grounds/garden for space to run off excess energy, relax on the picnic benches surrounded by flowers, or at night embrace the dark skies and a sport of stargazing.

Blaxhall itself is just a small village, but the area offers a huge variety of things to do and see. Take a trip to the awe-inspiring Anglo Saxon royal burial site of Sutton Hoo which of course is home to one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of all time, on either a guided or self-guided visit. Explore the famous nature reserves of Minsmere and Orford Ness. Biology groups will love Orford Ness and its’ wild shingle environment which is perfect for studying. It also holds the former headquarters of the Atomic Weapons Establishment. Go beyond RSPB Minsmere to the north and discover three reserves: Walberswick, Hen Reedbeds and Dingle Marshes which make up the Suffolk Coast National Nature Reserve and is home to otters, natterjack toads and five species of deer. Or for something completely different visit Rendlesham Forest and explore their UFO trail of waymarked walking and cycling routes through the famous UFO sightings of December 1980.

Just down the road from the hostel you’ll find Snape Maltings Concert Hall, one of the world’s leading centres of music, where you’ll find an inspiring programme of festivals and concerts all throughout the year. Just a five minute, road-free walk from the hostel takes you to Blaxhall Heath where you’ll find nightjars, hares and deer. Or run off some steam on the large playing fields that are within walking distance of the village, and are perfect for all types of ball games.

Non-educational and social groups will also love gathering together at the hostel, particularly over a hearty meal in our communal dining room. Afterwards take a trip out for a sing-song at the local pub, which is famous for its live folk music events.

The hostel is a TripAdvisor GreenLeader which means we are showcased as an accommodation provider that is committed to green practices. Your group can get involved too – ask us for details.
