Day Stays usually run from 10.00am – 2.30pm, but times can be adjusted to suit your group and travel plans.

Orienteering
Develop skills in map reading on our purpose-built orienteering courses, in small groups participants will be provided with a map and score card, taught the basics skills needed to be successful, and then set off using the ‘star’ orienteering method.

Archery
On purpose-built archery ranges, participants will be taught the correct archery technique and have the opportunity to practise and develop their skill (usually 3 goes minimum).

Shelter building
In small groups participants attempt to build a shelter to protect their group from the elements, shelters are built using tarpaulins.

Fire lighting
In small groups participants will be taught the basic science behind fire lighting, including the fire triangle. Participants will also be introduced to a range of traditional methods of lighting fires and how to build a successful fire. Once fully briefed and demonstrated, groups will be provided with a fire steel and some tinder, can they get the fire going and work as a team to forage for enough material to keep it going?

Team challenges
Includes a range of challenges that are completed either as small or full groups. Each activity is designed to focus on a small set of teamworking skills, which can be developed and reflected on.

Kit
All equipment and resources will be provided by the hostel for each of the activities. However, we recommend that the students come prepared, here’s what we think they’ll need.
- Waterproof coat
- Waterproof trousers (optional)
- Sturdy trainers/walking shoes
- Comfortable outdoor clothing that they won’t mind getting wet/muddy (ideally not Jeans)
- Gloves/scarf
- Water bottle
- Day bag/rucksack
