This will be a local walk focussing on a site of interest or significant viewpoint, the enjoyment of being outside, and the positive benefits for walking for pleasure. Walks can be tailored for specific curriculum areas if required.

Using Andy Goldsworthy as inspiration participants in small groups get together to plan develop and create their own ephemeral art using only natural materials.

Duration: 60 - 90 minutes

On a section of Jurassic coastline world renowned for its fossils and jet participants, students will learn about the rock cycle, how material is fossilised, evolution and how to identify fossils, jet and minerals. Then they will spend time sifting through the shingle looking for fossils and keepsakes to take home, all in an inspiring location on the beach below Whitby Abbey.

Kit

All equipment and resources will be provided by the hostel for each of the activities. However, we recommend that the students come prepared, here’s what we think they’ll need.

  • Waterproof coat
  • Waterproof trousers (optional)
  • Sturdy trainers/walking shoes
  • Comfortable outdoor clothing that they won’t mind getting wet/muddy (ideally not Jeans)
  • Gloves/scarf
  • Water bottle
  • Day bag/rucksack
